George E. Miller, 94, who lived most of his adult life in Boise, passed quietly away at his home in Boise while sleeping on December 4, 2014. George was born November 22, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, to William and Mae Miller, and grew up in Missouri with his 7 brothers and sisters. He lived in St. Louis until the age of 12, when his parents moved the family to a small farm near Cuba, Missouri, to enable the family to be more self-sufficient during the years of the great depression. Farm life made a lasting impression on him and helped develop a life-long love and appreciation of the great outdoors.
A member of the "Greatest Generation", although he would never have claimed that honor for himself, he served in the Army Air Force during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946. During the war, George met Gloria Faye Elder of Colorado, the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. J. Edwin Elder. George and Gloria were married in 1945, and following George's discharge from the Army, followed Gloria's parents to Boise, settling here in 1947. Two children followed, daughter Rita in 1950 and son Dennis in 1952. The family grew up and lived for many years, among numerous close friends and neighbors, in the house George built on Woodacres Drive in Boise. He also built and developed his own auto repair business at which he worked for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1985. George and Gloria were lifelong members of Wright Community Congregational Church in Boise, where Gloria's father once served as pastor. George was devastated when Gloria passed in 1990, but found love again and married Nancy Ann Hatfield of Boise in 1991, acquiring more children in stepsons Michael and Robert Hatfield and stepdaughter Laurie Ann Hatfield.
George loved the outdoors, especially his fall adventures into the central Idaho mountains in pursuit of the ever-elusive elk. In later years, he and Nancy roamed the country in their RV, visiting relatives and enjoying everything that life on the road had to offer. Generous to a fault, he was always willing to help anyone at anytime for any reason. George loved to share his many stories about his life and adventures with his family and friends, especially with his grandchildren.
He is survived by wife Nancy Miller of Boise, brother Robert Miller of North Idaho, sister June Swope of Missouri, son Dennis Miller and wife Denise of Colorado, stepson Michael Hatfield and wife Sherry of Indiana, stepson Robert Hatfield of Russia, stepdaughter Laurie Ann Hatfield of Oregon, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
