James Hirst, Sr, Father of James Hirst, contemporary farmer, is one of the few newer settlers we are able to mention here. He and his wife were natives of Yorkshire, England and came to America at an early date, residing in the East (New Jersey) until 1865 coming at that time to Winfield Township (Sauk County), loacting in the Northern part of the township. Mrs Hirst maiden name was Harriett Croft. Mr. and Mrs. Hirst were the parents of nine children, two of whom died in England. Of the others we mention: James, married Laura Lauton; Francis, married Rosa Todd - they had two sons. One of whom Leslie, who married Alice Hawes, resides in Dellona Township; Lucy married John Montgomery - the Montgomery's are local residents; William, married Myrtle Vogel, and resides in Beloit Wisconsin.

Floyd James Hirst was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Hirst, September 2nd 1889 in Winfield where he grew to manhood. He graduated from the Reedsburg High School with the class of 1914, and from the LaCrosse Business College in 1915, choosing as his profession that of bookkeeping.

He enlisted in the World War in Dakota where he was then living, receiving his call to go to Camp Dodge, Iowa where he served for about six weeks. On account of poor health he was not allowed to go across, a fact he very much lamented, but was sent to Racine, Wisconsin and given a government position which he held until the close of the war when he received his discharge. He never being very robust, his health began to fail him and he had to give up his work and return home.

He died January 1st, 1926, aged 34 years, 3 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn their loss, his parents, two brothers, Virgil and Albert of Winfield, one sister, Mrs. Paul Halbersleben of Beloit, Wisconsin and a host of relatives and friends.

The funeral was conducted at the Methodist Church, Sunday, January 3 at 1 p. m. by Rev. Thos. B. Beavin. The service of song was rendered by Mrs. T. S. Beavin and Miss Mae McIntosh.

UPPER WINFIELD. On New Years day the neighborhood was grieved to hear of the death of Floyd Hirst. We all join in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. Those who came to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Halbersleben of Beloit, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lawton of Tomah, Dave Lawton and Charles Cattles of Mauston.

Albert Hirst, 68, died Saturday (June 28, 1968) at the Reedsburg Hospital after an illness. A retired Winfield farmer, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Reedsburg. Surviving are his wife Hazel; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard Fisher, Anoka, MN, and Mrs. Harold Richert, Choteau, MT; a sister, Mrs. Paul Halvensleben, Beloit; nine grandchildren . The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Friends may call after 2pm. at the Gant Funeral Home.
